Operation Anthropoid May 1942






 


Planned by British special operations and supported by the Czechoslovak government-in-exile, the preparation for Heydrich’s assassination called Operation Anthropoid involved officers Jozef Gabčík and Jan Kubiš as the major players. They were airlifted from Great Britain to Czechoslovakia along with seven other Czech soldiers in December of 1941. After scratching plans to kill Heydrich on a train and in his car in a forest, the plan was to attack him at a sharp turn in the Libeň district of Prague on his way from his home in Panenské Březany.


The assassination attempt

Gabčík and Kubiš were positioned at the tram stop near Bulovka Hospital where there was a bend in the road while their colleague Josef Valčík signaled with a mirror the arrival of Heydrich’s open-roofed Mercedes Benz. Gabčík jumped in front of the vehicle, but his sten gun jammed. Heydrich had his car stopped and tried to shoot Gabčík when Kubiš hurled a grenade. Although the bomb only hit the rear wheel of the car, Heydrich suffered a broken rib, ruptured diaphragm and splinters in his spleen, and Kubiš was injured as well. The explosion shattered the windows of a tram as shards of glass maimed passengers. Though severely injured, Heydrich tried to chase Gabčík but soon collapsed. The driver Klein raced after Kubiš, but his gun jammed, and the resistance fighter got away. Following Heydrich’s orders, Klein then set after Gabčík, who hid in a butcher’s shop. The owner, a Nazi sympathizer, revealed his hideout to Klein, who collided with Gabčík in the shop. The assassin injured the driver in the leg and scurried away to safety. The 38-year old Heydrich was taken to nearby Bulovka hospital where he died June 4 at 4:30 am.


The manhunt

The assassination triggered the greatest manhunt in the history of the Third Reich. The Gestapo knew they were on the hunt for parachutists due to an unused bomb with British parts and a British sub-machine-gun abandoned at the scene. The Nazis offered a reward of one million marks for the Czechs’ arrest. Martial law was proclaimed, and everyone over the age of 15 had to register with the police by May 30, or they would be shot. Evidence left at the scene was displayed in the window of Baťa shoe store on Wenceslas Square. Some 21,000 Germans searched over 36,000 houses but came up empty.

After taking refuge with two Prague families, the assassins, along with five other paratroopers, hid in the Karel Boromějský Greek Orthodox Church in Prague’s New Town. Resistance fighter Karel Čurda betrayed them, and 700 German soldiers pounced upon the church. Three resistance fighters, including Kubiš, were killed in the prayer loft after a battle that lasted two hours, even though the Czechs only had pistols and the soldiers were armed with sub-machine guns and hand grenades. After a preacher revealed that the others were hiding in the crypt, the soldiers tried to seize the catacombs, flood the space and smoke out the assassins. Finally, after holding out for six hours, the four parachutists, including Gabčík, committed suicide.


German reprisals: Lidice and Ležáky

The Germans unleashed a severe retaliation. Hitler lashed out by murdering thousands of Jews. He wanted to kill 10,000 Czech political prisoners, but high-ranking Nazi and military commander Heinrich Himmler convinced him that they needed the Czechs to keep the Protectorate industrially productive. Still, more than 13,000 were arrested, and 5,000 were murdered in reprisals. Due to false information, the Nazis thought the assassins were hiding in Lidice, a village near Prague, and also found a radio resistance transmitter in Ležáky. The Germans took revenge on Lidice by killing all 199 men in the town, arresting the 195 women and sending them to Ravensbrück concentration camp and taking the 95 children, eight of whom were given to German families. Most of the children disappeared; in all probability they were gassed. Lidice was razed June 9, 1942, and the ruins were bulldozed. The revenge on Ležáky was a nightmare as well. All the adults were murdered while the children disappeared, except for two who were handed over to Nazi families. The town was razed.
The dissolution of the Munich Agreement and a highlight of Czechoslovak resistance

Czechoslovakia earned worldwide sympathy, and the Nazis’ revenge led to the dissolution of the Munich Agreement that had ceded the German-speaking Czech lands to the Third Reich. After the Allies would win the war, the region was to be returned to Czechoslovakia, the country’s supporters proclaimed. The only targeted killing of a high-ranking SS officer, the assassination of Heydrich proved to be an isolated event but also proved to be one of the highlights of resistance throughout Nazi-occupied Europe. Still, the repercussions were brutal and Heydrich’s death certainly did not make the German occupation less cruel.

Timeline D-Day Chronology


 CHRONOLOGY    D-Day 1944





 06th June: D-Day Landings. Allied Forces land on the northern coast of Normandy.

22th-21th June: Battle tor Cherbourg. The port is eventually captured but is so badly damaged as to be useless for some considerable time

03th July: US First Army begins to attack southwards towards St. Lo. The dense nature of the bocage country results in very slow progress and heavy casuaities.


8th-11th July: British and Canadians launch Operation Charnwood. They break into Caen but fail to clear the entire city.

17th July: Field Marshal Erwin Rommel. commander of Army Group B. is severely wounded  when his car is attacked by RAF ground-attack aircralt. Von Kluge takes over direct command of Army Group B.

18th July: Operation Goodwood begins. Caen is cleared but gains are limited. Goodwood does succeed in concentrating German attention on the British sector however.

18th July:  St Lo is finally taken by the Americans.

20th July: Hitler survives an attempted assassination at the "Wolf ‘s Lair". his forward command post in East Prussia. This intensifies Hitler's suspicion of the German  officer corps.

24th July: Carpet-bombing attack. scheduled to begin at 13.00hrs is cancelled. Some of the  aircraft do not get the message and carry out the attack. US 30th Division sufiers more than 150 casualties from bombs that drop short.

25 July                 
09.36.Hrs: P-47 fighter-bombers begin strafing runs and ground-attack missions  along the northern edge of the bomb zone. They are followed by more than 1,800 heavy bombers which carpet bomb an area 1000 yards long by 2.500 yards deep. The effect on Panzer Lehr Division is devastating. US troops suffer approximately600 casualties from bombs dropping short. including LT. Gen Lesley McNair, head of US Arrny Ground Forces.

11.00hrs: VII Corps begins ground assault but advance is held up by areas ol continued resistance. US forces only penetrate about a mile. 24.00hrs Town of Hebecrevon is finally taken.

26th July: Maj. Gen Collins of VII Corps orders his armored units to spearhead his advance. German defenses begin to collapse as CCB/3rd Armored Division and 1st infantry Division capture Marigny and 2nd Armored Division advances seven miles.

28th/29th July: German forces in the Ronoey pocket are largely destroyed while trying to break out.

30th July: Maj Gen John Woods 4th Armored Division seizes Avrranches.

12th August:            In a daring night attack Leclerc's French 2nd Armored Division seize the bridges over the Fivar Sarthe.

13th August: Bradley orders Patton to direct his corps east rather than north into theArgentan-Falasie gap

14th August: St Malo is finally taken alter intense house-to-house fighting.

15th August: US Seventh Army lands on the southem coast or France near Marseilles.

16th August:  The Canadians finally take Falaise, leaving a gap of only 15 miles between the Allied spearheads. Hitler finally agrees to the withdrawal of German units in the  Falaise pocket. Patton's Third Army is on the outskirts of Chartres and Orleans.

17th August: Von Kluge is replaced by General Fieldmarschal Walter Model. Von Kluge commits suicide the next day. Citadel of St. Malo finally surrenders after direct   fire from 8-in. guns from a range of onlv 1.500 yards.

21st August: Falaise pocket is finally sealed. 10.000 German troops have been killed and 50.000 captured in the pocket. whilst 313 tanks have also been lost.

23rd  August: Hitler informs the commander of the Paris garrison. Dietrich von Cholchitz. that the city "must not fall into the hands of the enemy except as a field of ruins.

26th August:  French and US troops including Leclerc's 2nd Armored Division liberate Paris.

Cheap and cheerful...the Sten gun By KD



Guns are kind of important in a war and after losing so many during the flight from Dunkirk, the British army needed a quick and cheap replacement. The Thompson machine guns that were bought from the US were too expensive and in 1940 production was started on a gun that cost just under £3, or about £80 at today''s prices.

Named after its inventors; Shepherd, Turpin and Enfield of the Royal Small Arms Factory of Enfield, the Stengun became the mainstay of the British army and was shipped out to guerilla fighters and partisans fighting the Germans, helped along by using the same 9mm ammo used by the German MP40. By 1945, roughly 5 million weapons had been produced.

It was easy to produce, weighed only 3 kilograms, cheap, had a minimum of working parts, (only 50 in early variants) and needed little oiling. There were 5 main variants, not counting the silenced versions, from the Mark I to the Mark V, with a refinement towards simplicity with each iteration. The exception was the Mark V which added wooden grips and butt and could fit a bayonet and was issued to the Paratroopers at the Battle of Arnhem.

Although greeted with reservation by troops initially, the Stengun became a valued asset to the Allies and aside from issues with accuracy at range, misfires, jamming, and a tendency




to fire when dropped, it was a very successful weapon whose production was only surpassed by the Russian PPSh-41 and led to many copies, from the Germans to the Chinese and many other nations.

And finally...the Stengun was so prone to fire off an entire clip of 32 rounds, by being dropped, that troops used them almost like grenades. A handful would be tossed through a door and the guns would fire until empty, handily clearing a room of the enemy.

The White Rose Movement

The White Rose Movement :
During the rise of Nazism before the second world war started, a huge transformation was starting to take place in Germany. Many huge changes were already taken place, the burning of the Reichstag and the harsh brutality of the SA under the leadership of Ernst Rohm. 



Voices speaking out of this oppression was not appreciated by the Nazi officials and those caught were silenced, either executed or sent to prison. One notable person during these years was a young student Sophie Scholl, she was associated with the White Rose Movement. A movement of a youthful resistance to Nazism.

Very few people today would know that Sophie Scholl is not the best known resistance fighter. But unlike most young women of her time, her story is very powerful. Sophie was a very important member of the White Rose --- a resistance movement organized and run by students at the Munich University.

This group printed and distributed leaflets, highlighted the Nazi crimes and the corrupt political system. The White Rose group was a protest against the Nazi state, and a call for resistance. The Gestapo (secret police) caught up with Sophie, and she was beheaded on the 22nd February 1943.

Sophie was born in May 1921, the fourth of six children born of Robert Scholl, the Mayor of Forchtenberg, a small town north-east of Wurttemberg. The Scholl family were a middle class family, that later lived in the town of Ulm where her father worked as a tax consultant and state auditor.

When the Nazi came to power in January 1933, many sensed a new air and excitement grew as many got involved in the National Socialist youth. The children of the Scholl household got involved with this youth cult of Nazism. As a teenager Sophie believed in those ideologies propagated and was intrigued by the focus on nature and communal experiences. Soon Sophie got involved with the League of German Girls (the Bund Deutsch Madel ). Being very apt Sophie steadily and quickly rose through the ranks. Although mostly her father Robert did not like their children's involvement in the Nazi youth groups.

Robert Scholl made no secret about the Nazi party from there beginning, his children were raised and firmly grounded in theatre bad Christian tradition. He noticed his children's developments in Germany and it's form of Nazi nationalism with growing fear and horror. Lively discussions were a daily occurrence at dinner table, teaching the children the value of open and honest conversation. (a rarity at that time).

As mentioned earlier Sophie was the fourth of six children, her oldest brother Hans, was later to become the founding member of the White Rose, also were members of the non-Nazi groups of young people. These associations shared and propagated a love of nature, outdoor adventures, as well as the music, art, and literature of German Romanticism. This may seem to be compatible with the Nazi ideology by many, but these alternative groups were slowly dissolved and finally banned by 1936. Hans continued to be active in one such group, however, and was arrested in 1937 along with several of the Scholl children. This arrest left a bad feelings on Sophie's conscience and she began the process that eventually turned her from being a happy supporter of three Nazi system to an active resistance fighter.

On September 1st 1939, Hitler invaded Poland, and two days later, France and Britain declared war on Germany. The older Scholl brothers were sent off to fight on the front. Sophie's life in the town of Ulm changed as well. Sophie graduated in high school in the spring of 1940 and started an apprenticeship to become a kindergarten teacher. Later she took an interest in studying biology and philosophy. In order to be admitted, students had to spend a period of time working for the state in the Reichsarbeitsdienst (National Labour Service RAD).

Sophie's hopes that becoming a teacher would allow her to substitute for the RAD were quashed and she instead had to enter the service in the spring of 1941. Sophie loathed this military -like regime and mind numbing routine caused her to find comfort in her own spirituality, influenced and guided by the readings of the theologian Augustus of Hippo.

As Sophie wrote her thoughts, realizing that her "soul was hungry" --she longed for an autonomous life, and end to the war, and for happiness with her boyfriend Fritz Hartnagel, who was now fighting on the Eastern front. She became more disillusioned and her doubts grew about this regime.

In May 1942 Sophie finally moved to Munich to study philosophy and biology, her brother Hans a medical student at the same university, and a few of his friends had already begun to actively question the system. Serving on the Eastern Front, they learned about the crimes committed in Poland and Russia first hand and witnessed the misery with their own eyes.

They knew they could not keep this quiet, and in June 1942, they started printing and distributing pamphlets in and around Munich, calling their fellow students and the German public to action. Other members of their circle joined in the endeavour, writing four pamphlets until the autumn of the same year. Being a student at the Munich University, it was not long before Sophie had not only seen the leaflets, but also applauded the content as well as the contribution, and courage of the authors in promoting the power of truth. On discovering her brother's involvement, Sophie demanded to join the group. She wanted to become active, the passive Sophie was gone.

The White Rose was maybe considered a small endeavour, but yet the consequences were quite the opposite. At the core of this group, we're Hans and Sophie Scholl, also with in this group were fellow students Alexander Schmorell, Willi Graf, Christoph Probst, and also a professor of philosophy and music at the Munich University, Kurt Huber. Together they published and distributed six pamphlets, first typed on a typewriter, then multiplied via a mimeograph. First these pamphlets were distributed by mail, sending them to professors, booksellers, authors, friends and others --- using phone books and hand writing each envelope. Little did this group know, that they distributed thousands, reaching household throughout Germany.

There hardest hurdle was acquiring such a large amount of paper, envelopes, and stamps, as Germany had entered a time of strict rationing, this hurdle was very problematic, and drawing attention from inquiring and suspicious eyes was the last thing the White Rose group needed. The members of the group managed this by engaging in a wide ranging network of supporters in cities and towns as far north as Hamburg, and as far south as Vienna. These networks also were activated to distribute the leaflets, attempting to trick the Gestapo into believing that the White Rose Movement had locations all across Germany and beyond.

When reading the movements pamphlets today, one cannot help and think of how chillingly accurate they were in their accusations and calls to action, the powerful insight they provide about Nazi Germany.

The third pamphlet reads:-
                                           "Our current 'state' is
                                               the dictatorship of
                                               evil. We know that
                                               already, I hear you
                                               object, and we don't
                                               need you to reproach
                                               us for it yet again.
                                               But, I ask you, if you
                                               know that, then why
                                               don't you act? Why
                                               do you tolerate these
                                               rules gradually
                                               robbing you, in public
                                               and in private, of one
                                               right after another,
                                               until one day
                                               nothing, absolutely
                                               nothing, remains but
                                               the machinery of the
                                               state, under the
                                               command of
                                               criminals and
                                               drunkards."

In their attempt to gain support for the resistance and stop the war effort, they gave clear advice and advocated sabotage of Hitler's war machine. Their fifth leaflet stated: "And now every convinced opponent of National Socialism must ask himself how he can fight against the present 'state' in the most effective way... We cannot provide each man with the blueprint for his acts, we can only suggest them in general terms, and he alone will find the way of achieving this end: Sabotage in armament plants and war industries, sabotage at all gatherings, rallies, public ceremonies, and organisations of the National Socialist Party. Obstruction of the smooth functioning of the war machine... Try to convince all your acquaintances... of the senseless of continuing, of the hopelessness of this war; of our spiritual and economic enslavement at the hands of the National Socialists; of all moral and religious values; and urge them to passive resistance!"

In January 1943, things were looking good, the White Rose Movement felt empowered and hopeful. Their hard work seemed to be working, rattling the Nazi authorities and igniting a spark of discussion among their peers. The group was well organised and they were about to set up even more connections to other underground resistance groups. Observing the political situation in Nazi Germany in January 1943, Sophie and the White Rose members believed a change in the country was imminent.

The German army's disastrous defeat at Stalingrad was a turning point on the Eastern Front, and voices of dissent grew louder at theMunich University after students were publicly called out as leeches and war registers. This encouraged them to work with more boldness, distributing the pamphlets in person, also writing slogans like "Down with Hitler" and "Freedom" on the walls around Munich. The last and sixth pamphlet of the White Rose Movement read: 








                                            "Even the most dull-witted German has had
                                              his eyes opened by the terrible bloodbath,
                                             which, in the name of freedom and honour
                                              of the German nation, they have unleashed
                                              upon Europe, and unleashed anew each day.
                                              The German name will remain forever tarnished
                                              unless finally the German youth stands up,
                                              and pursues both revenge and atonement,
                                              smites our tormentors, and founds a new
                                              intellectual Europe Students!

                                             The German people look to us! The res-
                                             possibility is ours: just as the power of the
                                             spirit broke the Napoleonic terror in 1813,
                                             so too will it break the terror of the Nationalist
                                             Socialist in 1943."

Hans and Sophie distributed the pamphlets at their university on
February 18th 1943, for their fellow students to find walking between lessons. At some point, in what we can assume was an
attempt to make even more people see leaflets, Sophie pushed a stack off a railing unto the central hall. What is now an icon scene
in every documentary about the group, was the moment that changed everything. The pamphlets falling through the air descending to the floor of the central hall was seen by a caretaker
a staunch Nazi supporter, who had Hans and Sophie arrested immediately by the Gestapo. The draft for the seventh pamphlet was still in the bag belonging to Hans. This lead to the arrest of Christoph Probst on that very same day.

The three endured a mock trial after each of them had received a long and arduous interrogation. They all took the blame for the actions of the White Rose Movement. This attempt to save their friends from arrest and interrogation failed in the end, and Willi Graf, Alexander Schmorell, and Kurt Huber were finally arrested later that month and put to death shortly after.

After a day and a half trial led by the infamous Roland Freisler, president of the People's Court, Hans, Sophie, and Christoph were sentenced to death for treason. Despite this horrific prospect, Sophie did not waver. Freisler asked her as a closing question whether she had not-
"indeed come to the conclusion that (her) conduct and the actions
along with her brother and other persons in the present phase of the war should be seen as a crime against the community?"

Sophie answered-
                           "I am, now as before, of the opinion that I
                            did the best that I could do for my nation.
                             I therefore do not regret my conduct and
                             will bear the consequences that result
                             from my conduct.

Sophie Scholl, Hans Scholl, and Christoph Probst were executed by guillotine on February 22nd 1943. And while their death's were only barely mentioned in German newspapers, they received attention abroad. In April, The New York Times wrote about the student opposition in Munich. In June 1943, Thomas Mann, in a BBC broadcast aimed at Germans, spoke of the White Rose's actions. The text of the sixth leaflet was smuggled into the United Kingdom where they were reprinted and dropped over Germany by Allied aeroplanes in July of the same year.

In post-war Germany, the White Rose was and revered. A myraid of schools, streets, and a prestigious award are named after individual members, the group or the siblings Scholl. Sophie's story looms especially large in the history of Ulm, my hometown she personifies the importance of acting according to one's beliefs and following your conscience, even in the face of great sacrifice.

In collective memory, her story reminds us to not be silent, and fight for what Sophie wrote on the back of her indictment the day before she was killed: Freitheit---Freedom.

The Russian Monster By KD

 




Although the limelight is often stolen by the more famous T-34 and KV1, a more rare, but no less notable Russian tank should also be given its fair share of time on the stage of history. If not for its performance, then definately for its more unique aspects.

In 1938 the Russian army wanted a tank that could take out bunkers and other strong points. The result was a huge box shaped turret and gun mounted on the KV1 chassis and in only 2 weeks the KV2 was born and prototypes were rolling out of the factory for testing.

In 1940 the fully fledged KV2 was unleashed onto the battlefield and sent straight into the Finnish Winter War with high hopes. It was ostensibly a self-propelled gun, or assault gun, designed as a bunker buster with its 152mm Howitzer, but it was also used as a heavy tank in its own right and this is where it's many failings really became apparent. It had not just one achilles heel, but many.

Although reasonably effective at the start of the Finnish war taking out fixed points, its poor top speed of 28kms (17mph) an hour became an issue, especially when combined with the huge target presented by the overly large turret and slow traverse speed. It suffered a large number of mechanical breakdowns and even though the gun could, at times, be devastating against fixed targets, such as bunkers and static tanks, the turret would often jam, or become totally inoperative due to the turret ring being destroyed simply from the gun recoil.

However, in one rare tank battle, at the Battle of Raseiniai, the gods smiled on a lone KV2. The German army was not only stalled in its advance but suffered serious losses. One KV2 held up the entire 6th Panzer division and by the end of the battle had destroyed 24 tanks. But this alone was not enough to save the mighty KV2.

The failings became too much to bear and the lack of mobility, engine failures, turret seizures and large turret silhouette condemned the KV2 to a limited run of only 334 tanks being built. Compared to the great success of other Russian tanks, it was an utter failure.

As the Germans fought on against Stalin, they siezed any KV2s they found and used them until they broke down, which often didn't take long, before abandoning them. Viewing them just as poorly as their original makers and a waste of resources to repair. In the end, the KV2 looked intimidating and it seemed good on paper, but fell far short when put into the fierce heat of battle.

Why the German 88mm Gun Was the Best Throughout WWII by Phil Zimmer

The German 88mm gun, originally designed as an antiaircraft
artillery weapon, was equally effective as an antitank gun.

The November 21, 1944, daylight flight of Teddy’s Rough Riders was anything
but routine for American pilot Werner G. Göring, nephew of Nazi Reichsminister
of Aviation Hermann Göring, and the other nine men on the ill-fated B-17 Flying
Fortress. Before the day was over, the plane had flown some four hours eastward
in an armada of 1,291 bombers to strike Leuna, a large chemical complex lying
deep inside Germany. The plane suffered nearly fatal damage from fierce air defense
fire from a German 88mm gun, like the Fliegerabwehrkanone (FlaK), along with other
anti-aircraft guns. As they worked their way back toward safety in England, the
two port engines began smoking and had to be shut down and the two remaining engines
cranked up as much as possible to keep the Fortress in the air.

Fuel was running desperately low as Göring ordered his crew to sit tight as they
flew low over the icy English Channel. As they approached the base at Molesworth,
the heavy Fortress was grossly underpowered and intermittently stalling. The plane
had been vibrating wildly in the air, but it eventually skid to a stop after spinning
in circles across a grass strip adjacent to the main runway. The crew had managed to
return safely from another trip over Germany despite having suffered tremendous damage,
including more than 245 holes, mostly caused by the fierce ground fire over Leuna.
25 Lost, 567 Damaged. But From What?

Others were not so fortunate. Twenty-five of the 1,291 bombers sent out that morning
never returned and another 567 were damaged, largely from antiaircraft fire. The
Luftwaffe was a shadow of its former self at that point in the war, but German
defense—bolstered by the 88s and larger guns—was credited with destroying 6,400
Anglo-American planes and damaging 27,000 others in 1944 alone.

The 88 earned its reputation as the best overall gun of the war. It was justifiably
feared by Allied airmen, tankers, and foot soldiers because of its accuracy, lethality,
and versatility. The weapon was deployed on German tanks, as an antitank gun, an assault
gun, and for antiaircraft purposes.

The German 88mm gun, originally designed as an antiaircraft artillery weapon, was equally
effective as an antitank gun.


The gun was aptly described as “anti-everything” by one infantryman. The weapon even
grudgingly made it into American comics during the war with cartoonist Bill Maudlin
showing character G.I. Willie angrily telling an officer, “I’ll let you know when we
capture the inventor of the 88.”


The Origins of the German 88mm Gun

The German 88mm gun’s lineage can be traced back to late 1916 when the German Army first
adapted the established German naval weapon for ground warfare in World War I.  Machinery
for producing both the barrels and the ammunition was readily available at the production
facilities of both Krupp AG and Rheinmetall. The German Kriegsmarine had adopted the gun
largely because a round of 88mm ammunition was considered the largest and heaviest
(about 34 pounds) that a single man could handle.

The World War I model could fire a 9.6 kilogram high-explosive to a height of 6,850 meters,
with a maximum range of 10,800 meters. Even then the Germans relied on rudimentary trailers,
stabilized by folding outrigger arms on each side, pulled by tractors to give the guns a great
degree of mobility. By late 1918 the Germans had even implemented rudimentary forms of centralized
fire control for the weapon. (Take an in-depth look at the Great War and all the moments that defined

At the end of World War I, the Versailles Treaty brought stringent sanctions on the German military
and industrial complex, especially on Krupp and Rheinmetall. Both firms established relationships
with foreign companies, enabling research and development to continue away from the vigilant Versailles inspectors. By 1933 the first few examples of the updated 88 were in the hands of the Wehrmacht. The full scale production of the officially designated 88mm FlaK 18 was underway by early 1936. The 18 was used in the name designation in an effort to mislead the treaty observers into believing that the design was a mere copy of the 1918 model.

Design Improvements (And Significant Setbacks) Throughout the 1930s

In reality, the updated weapon was a dramatic step forward. Initially designed to strike down bombers,
it was semi-automatic with the gun’s recoil used to eject the spent cartridge case and cock the firing
mechanism. The next round could be inserted by hand or with a power assisted rammer. The highly mobile axle bogies could lower the cruciform firing platform for more stabilized firing. The barrel could be swung a full 360 degrees, and a trained gun crew could fire upward of 20 rounds per minute.

That FlaK 18 had a one-piece barrel with an expected service life of 900 rounds using cordite-type
propellant and projectiles employing copper driving bands. This short barrel life would necessitate
the replacement of barrels under field conditions. Rheinmetall came up with a three-piece barrel
solution, enabling field technicians to simply replace the center section, which endured the most
firing punishment. The use of the small sections of the inner tube eliminated what would have been
severe maintenance, servicing, and field supply problems.

The introduction of the three-piece barrel, called the RA 9, did present other unforeseen difficulties.
For one thing, high-priced and scarce steel needed to be used because the new barrel lacked the rigidity
of the earlier one-piece construction. Closer machining tolerances also were required, which necessitated additional man hours in construction, and the heavier barrel resulted in carriage component changes in the recoil and equilibrator mechanisms. Eventually a two-section inner barrel was introduced to lessen wear and tear and decrease incidents of shell jamming.

The use of the RA 9 and the modified carriage resulted in the 88mm FlaK 36. As the war progressed, the use of such propellants as Diglycol and Gudol lessened barrel wear. The eventual replacement of copper driving bands by sintered iron bands also lessened wear compared to the more expensive and hard to find copper. These developments increased barrel life to 6,000—and in some cases to 10,000— rounds, eliminating the initial reason for the multi-barrels. But the German production lines could not be easily changed, so the Nazis continued to produce the expensive and time-consuming multi-barrels until the last year of the war when a plant in Pilsen was able to produce a monobloc barrel using a novel vertical centrifuge casting process.

A Case of ‘The Clanks’

The updated German 88mm FlaK 37 guns added a rather sophisticated (for the time) fire-control data
display unit. This antiaircraft gun initially was to be used in the defense of the homeland, although
90 FlaK 37s were sold to Finland for defense against Soviet air raids. And nearly 200 of the guns fell
into Norwegian hands when the Germans departed that country.

All three models of the early 88s were 56 calibers long, meaning the barrel length was 56 times that of
the 88mm caliber. The standard gun fired a 17-pound shrapnel grenade that could climb thousands of feet
into the air and then burst into 1,500 or more shards that could damage or destroy any plane within 200 yards.

The antiaircraft shells had two types of fuses: those with barometric fuses set to specific altitudes
and those with time-delayed fuses. No matter what triggered them, the jagged steel fragments could
easily decapitate or dismember one or more members of a flight crew. The results of such an attack
could be devastating even for those who survived the battering. Many became afflicted with “the clanks,” a paralyzing sense of dread, and became known as “dead men flying.”

In the first half of 1944 casualty rates for every 1,000 bomber crewmen serving six months in combat
included 712 killed or missing and 175 wounded, for 89 percent. Barely one in four U.S. airmen completed 25 missions over Germany, and that minimum quota was raised to 30 missions then 35 after the liberation of France and Belgium.

For antiaircraft work, the FlaK 18 and 36 had a fuse-setting device on the left side with a slightly different device on the 37. The nose of the projectile was inserted into a cup at the top of the machine that would automatically set the fuse based on information from the target data transmission. Once set, the projectile was forced out of the device for loading. Later in the war, some FlaK 37 guns had the fuse setter located on the loading tray, speeding up the process; and, if necessary, time fuses could be set by hand with a special key by a member of the gun’s 11man crew.

Deadly Effective “AP” Rounds

The figures for the German 88mm gun vary a bit for the first three models, considering the specific model and the training of the crew. It could fire 15 to 20 rounds per minute, and even with a diminished six-man crew, the gun could be put into action within 21/2 minutes. The same small crew could prepare the gun for movement within 31/2 mintes. The maximum range was 14,860 meters and the maximum vertical range was given at 10,600 meters.

As the gun’s use expanded to other roles so did the different types of rounds employed by the Nazis.
A 1944 German ordnance listing includes 19 different rounds. That includes eight types of high-explosive (HE) rounds and seven armor-piercing (AP), with the rest being kineticenergy solid projectiles. The HE rounds employed two types of fuses. When used in an antiaircraft capacity, clockwork time fuses were employed. By the end of the war, a percussion element was added to the clockwork fuse mechanism. For use against ground targets, either type of fuse was used, with the clockwork mechanism able to produce deadly airbursts over Allied positions.

The AP rounds also proved deadly effective. Once the projectile penetrated the target, a small bursting
charge was ignited by a delayed percussion fuse that had a tracer element in its base. The tracer aided
the gunner and the delayed fused helped create mayhem inside the target. Not fully satisfied with that,
the Germans went on to produce the AP40 rounds for use with antitank and tank guns. These used tungsten carbide penetrator slugs minus a bursting charge that carried more energy for their weight and size.
Fortunately for the Allies, use of the AP40 rounds was restricted by the limited supply of tungsten carbide.

The basic AP round used chemical energy rather than kinetic energy. The round used the hollow-charge principle to penetrate armor with an exceptionally high temperature jet formation that burned its way into the target. Most of these rounds were largely used by the feared Tiger I tank.
Mounting the 88 Onto the First Tigers

The Germans developed the Sd Kfz 7, a semitracked vehicle, to haul the 88s on their Sonderanhanger 201 trailers.
This specially designed vehicle was basically an artillery tractor, with tracks on the back and traditional tires on the front steering axel. The tracks provided cross-country mobility, contributing greatly to the usefulness of the 88, especially on the poor roads of the Eastern Front that were often no more than muddy paths.

The Germans were so impressed with the 88 that as early as 1936 plans were afoot to mount the weapon on a tank that eventually became the Tiger I.

While the ballistics of the German 88mm KwK 36 tank gun and antiaircraft guns were identical, the tank gun had a one-piece barrel and a thin jacket. Like other German tank guns, the breech block used a vertical sliding action in place of the horizontal sliding block used on the antiaircraft guns. The recoil mechanism was different and there was a double-baffle muzzle brake to lessen stress on the vehicle.

The trigger on the tank was repositioned from the breech block to the gunner’s elevated hand wheel. The heavy and well-armored turret was slow moving, adding to the tank’s ponderous reputation. The rounds were the same as used on the FlaK 18-37 series of antiaircraft guns, except for the use of the electrical primers that relied on a 12-volt vehicle battery. Some 92 rounds could be carried around and under the turret, although crews often did manage to store additional rounds.

The accuracy and distance of the Tiger I’s 88 gun often resulted in a “one shot, one kill” ratio for the
Germans against Allied tanks and their crews.

The size and the weight of the 63-ton Tiger, coupled with its somewhat underpowered V-12, 700 horsepower Mayback engine hindered mobility and usefulness on the battlefield, despite its fearsome gun.


A Self-Propelled Gun With 360-Degree Maneuverability

The Germans also used the 88mm gun as a self-propelled gun. That further improved its mobility and increased its usefulness for close-in support for ground troops. This resulted in the Selbstfahrlafette with armor protecting the engine and driver. Six of these tank hunters were used successfully in the battle for France.
However, the vehicle proved top heavy and provided very little space for the crew to operate the gun.
There was limited movement in the gun, little space for carrying ammunition, and no provision for outriggers to stabilize the gun when firing. These were succeeded by the Zugkraftwagen 18t, a larger, more powerful and more heavily armored vehicle that could travel at 40 kilometers per hour. The gun on that vehicle could be elevated and swung 360 degrees for anti-aircraft use. It came with outrigger legs and a more accommodating firing platform for the crew.

Initial plans called for 112 units, but only 14 were produced by June 1943 when production ceased when other programs were given greater priority. As Germany’s military prospects continued to diminish, additional prototypes appeared, included one mounted on a converted bus chassis. The few that were actually produced were rushed to the Eastern Front in an effort to slow the advancing Red Army.

The 88 also was mounted on railway cars and used there in antiaircraft roles. In some cases, full railway
batteries were positioned in the railroad yards. The Germans also mounted the guns on the Siebel Ferry, a shallow draught, twinhulled craft. These floating gun platform-ferry combinations proved quite effective and were used in the successful evacuation of two German divisions and all their equipment from Sicily.


The 88 On the Tiger II

Developments continued on the basic FlaK gun, resulting in the emergence of the 88 FlaK 41 that first saw real action in late 1943 in Tunisia. The barrel had been lengthened to the point that it had five main
components. The multi-segment barrel initially presented difficulties similar to early multi-barrels.
The gun proved to be a significant improvement on earlier models, despite its complexity and high cost
of production. The number of barrel segments was first reduced to four and then to three in an effort to
reduce jamming. The gun’s maximum ceiling was 19,800 meters from 10,600 meters.

The German 88mm FlaK 41used an 858mm long cartridge, significantly longer than the cartridge used by its predecessors. The FlaK 41 was used primarily for air defense in the West, so its anti-armor use
was limited. The Germans found that it could outperform the older but larger caliber 10.5cm FlaK 38
and 39 heavy antiaircraft guns.

The Germans also designed an 88 PaK 43 as a dedicated antitank weapon, with the first ones coming off the production lines by the end of 1943. It soon became widely recognized as perhaps the best all
around antitank gun of the war. It could easily provide firepower in a full 360degree traverse and
it could penetrate the frontal armor of any Allied tank on the field. The gun’s distinctive, heavily
sloping front armor could deflect most oncoming rounds. The barrel was produced in two segments and
the breech was semi-automatic. The gun’s maximum possible range was 15,150 meters, enabling it to be used as a supporting field gun in addition to its antitank role.

The 88 PaK 43 was modified and placed on the Tiger II tank. This feared tank was designed to hold 40 HE and 40 AP rounds, and it first saw action in early 1944 on the Eastern Front. The Tiger II weighed in at nearly 69 tons—substantially heavier than its predecessor—yet it was still powered by the same Mayback engine, causing concern among the German military because of the Tiger II’s lack of speed, mobility, and exceptionally high fuel consumption. Because of those limitations, toward the end of the war it was used more in a defensive role.


Anti-Aircraft to Anti-Tank

The PaK 43 also was employed as a self-propelled gun in a number of forms, including the Nashorn
(Rhinoceros) and the Ferdinand. The latter was rushed into service for the Battle of Kursk in 1943
where 89 were reportedly used. The Ferdinands destroyed some 200 Soviet tanks, according to some reports, despite initial design flaws. The survivors of the fierce Kursk fighting were extensively rebuilt and were rebranded as the Elefant.

The PaK 43 was also placed on the Panzerjager Panther—or Jagdpanther—a fast-moving tank killer. It weighed in at 46 tons, could store up to 60 rounds, and could travel at speeds of 48 kilometers per hour. Fewer than the 425 units produced were actually delivered, but the Jagdpanther was pressed into action on all fronts where it earned the grudging respect of the Allies.

Interestingly, both Britain and the United States had guns with somewhat similar antiaircraft capabilities as the 88 FlaK. Both the British 94mm and the American 90mm could fire higher and loft larger projectiles.
On paper they could outperform the German gun, many contend. Both weapons, though, were bulkier and heavier.
The Allies restricted those guns to their initial antiaircraft roles, while the Germans expanded the 88’s
role to antitank and against fortified ground positions. This, in turn, led to other advances in terms of
power rammers, fuse-setting devices, and improved ammunition handling systems—-all of which made the weapon far more versatile and effective.

The German’s flexible and innovative approach to the initial 88 FlaK permitted them to learn and adapt
as the war progressed, improving the antiaircraft fire capabilities of the weapon and they successfully
modified it for tank, antitank, and related ground roles. This contributed greatly to the 88’s lasting
reputation as the legendary large gun of World War II.

Cruiser Tank Mk VIII Cromwell

 




In the United Kingdom the differential between 'Cruiser' and 'Infantry' tanks peristed almost until the end of the war despite the fact that most other nations had never entertained the notion. It persisted even after the unfortunate experiences of the early 'Cruiser' designs had highlighted the drawbacks of producing a lightly armed and armoured main battle tank, and continued even when when a replacement for the Crusader was being sought.

The need for more armour and a bigger gun was finally realized (and a more powerful  engine would be required) and in 1941 a new specification was issued. It was answered by two main entrants to the same basic A27 design, one the A27L with a Liberty engine (this was to become the Centaur) and the other the A27M with a Rolls-Royce Meteor that was to become the Cruiser Tank Mk VIII Cromwell.

The first Cromwells were produced in January 1943. The first three marks (Cromwell I with one 6-pdr and two Besa machine-guns, Cromwell II with wider tracks and only one machine-gun, and Cromwell III produced by re-engineering a Centaur I) all had as their main armament the 6-pdr (57-mm/2 244-in) gun, but by 1943 it had been decided that something heavier would be required and a new 75-mm (2.95-in) gun was demanded. For once things were able to move relatively swiftly on the production lines and the first 75-mm (2.95-in) Cromwell Mk IV tanks were issued to the armoured regiments in October 1943. Thereafter the 75-mm (2.95-in) gun remained the Cromwell's main gun until the Cromwell Mk VIII, which had a 95-mm (actually 94-mm/3.7 in) howitzer for close support.

  Perhaps the main value of the Cromwell to the British armoured regiments during 1943 was a training tank, for at last the troops had a match for its German counterparts. There was better armour (8.76 mm/0.315- 3in) on the Cromwell than any previous 'Cruiser' tank and the 75-mm (2.95 -in) gun, which shared many components with the smaller 6-pdr, at last provided the British tankies with a viable weapon.
But by the time they were ready for active service the Cromwells were in the process of being replaced by the readily-availible M4 Sherman for purposes of standardization and logistic safety. But the Cromwell did see service. Many were used by the 7th Armoured Division in the campaigns that followed from the Normandy landings. Here the excellent performance provided by the Meteor engine made the Cromwell a well-liked vehicle: it was fast and reliable and the gun proved easy to lay and fire.

The Cromwell was but a stepping stone to the later Comet tank which was to emerge as perhaps the best all-round British tank of the war years. But the Cromwell was an important vehicle, not just as a combat tank but for several other roles. Some were used as mobile artillery observation posts (Cromwell OP) with their main gun removed and with extra radios installed. Others had their turrets entirely removed and replaced by all the various bits and pieces required for the Cromwell to be used as the Cromwell AVR armoured recovery vehicle. The Cromwell was also used as the basis for a heavily armoured assault tank that became known as the A33 which was ready by May 1944 but never got into production.
