 Marlene Dietrich — The
Hollywood Star Who Chose to Fight Hitler
For International Women's Day, we remember
Marlene Dietrich, one of the most famous
actresses of the 20th century — and a woman who
used her fame to stand firmly against Nazi
Germany during World War II.

Marlene Dietrich was born in 1901 in Berlin,
Germany. She rose to international fame in the late
1920s and early 1930s as a glamorous film star,
becoming one of Hollywood’s biggest names after
starring in films such as The Blue Ange. With her
striking voice, confident personality, and unique
style, she quickly became one of the most
recognizable actresses in the world.
But when Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party rose to
power in Germany, Dietrich made a bold and
dangerous decision.

Despite being one of Germany’s most famous
actresses, she refused to support the Nazi regime.
In fact, she openly rejected offers from the
German government to return to Germany and
become a propaganda star for the Third Reich.
Instead, Marlene Dietrich chose to stand against
Hitler.

She became an American citizen in 1939 and used
her fame to support the Allied war effort. During
World War II, Dietrich travelled extensively with the
USO (United Service Organizations), performing
for Allied troops across Europe and North Africa.
She sang for soldiers in difficult and often
dangerous conditions, sometimes performing
close to the front lines. Her performances brought
moments of comfort and morale to troops who
were far from home and facing the harsh realities
of war.
One of her most famous songs, “Lili Marlene,"
became deeply associated with soldiers on both
sides of the conflict.
But Dietrich did more than entertain. She also
participated in anti—Nazi radio broadcasts aimed at
German soldiers, encouraging them to abandon
Hitler's cause and reminding them that the Nazi
regime did not represent the true Germany.
For her courage and dedication during the war,
Marlene Dietrich was awarded the Medal of
Freedom by the United States, one of the
country's highest civilian honours.
