In 2001 HBO launched their television miniseries Band of Brothers. This was an account of the young men who had enlisted as US soldiers in the newly formed Airborne division, the 506th Easy Company.
The series followed these men from setting foot at the training camp, Camp Tocca, until the planned drop on D-Day.
The battles from Normandy until they would make their way forward to their rendezvous with destiny, the relaxed at Hitler's Eagles nest as victors.
The series itself has ten episodes, which was based on the book written by Stephen Ambrose. I have read the book a few times, and lost count on the number of times that I have watched the series. Always discovering something new that I had missed.
Following the career of Lieutenant Richard Winters, his career as his endeavors and experience to his promotion of Major.
Wild Bill, Joe Toye, Skip Muck, and Carl Lipton to mention a few of these not only world war II hero's, but also known in many households, as the series became a success.
As Major Winters grandson asked him "are you a hero" and Major Winters humble reply "No son, but I served in the company of hero's".
The book Band of Brothers is a great, I found this very hard to put down and read it with in a couple of days, the next time I read it, I deliberately took my time to digest the book. Stephen Ambrose done more than just write a book, but captured the imagination of the reader. As if you were running up Currahee, three miles up and three miles down, and being part of a stick flying over the English channel, and anguish of the jump ahead..
Like most books, they always give you a bit more information than the television series, a fine example is Winter's issue with his commanding officer Herbert Sobel and the latrine incident. The book was first published in 1992, and is dedicated to the parachute infantry, United States army 1941-1945, who wore the purple heart as a badge of office.
This amazing book is 307 pages divided into nineteen chapters. For the World War II enthusiast, this is a great insight in the the life, of the American Airborne of 101st division, their humor, their gripes, the sadness of their friends lost in battle. But all in all, we learn of their acts of valor, truly a Company of Hero's...
